The Bible is not just a book of wisdom.
The Bible is not just a book of wisdom. It is words of life breathed by God and it is a means to correction and wisdom and eternal life.
Let’s start out with some words of wisdom from Paul to his understudies in the faith, namely Timothy and also to the individual churches that he writes to. 2 Timothy 2:15 (hover your mouse over the verse or click on it and a pop up will show the verse.)
Study to show thyself approved unto God
What exactly does Paul mean, Study to show thyself approved unto God? Well, excellent question! This is why if you can afford them, a number of Bible tools are very important. The better question would be, what is it that God Approves you for deeper understanding and deeper understanding of what?
The Bible is very exciting. The bible is nothing but exciting. It is full of Biblical mysteries and intrigue and passion and love. You have to study it to get closer to God. Classic Theology professor J.I. Packer states in his book (which should be required reading at all Seminaries) “Knowing God” (2), that without reading the Bible and studying it intimately, one can never truly know God.
Unfortunately, however, all too often the Bible is left like a boring book to collect dust on the coffee table or bookshelf.
So if America was supposedly founded on Christian principles, why are so many American’s illiterate when it comes to the Bible, and ignorant of the truth?
It all starts at the Seminary and Theology schools. The mishmash and hodgepodge of apostate heresy that is being passed off at Seminaries and Theology schools is anything but true Biblical Theology. These comments by Piper, (show him for what he truly is, a wolf in sheep’s clothing!) And far too many American’s are falling for this Cow Dung theology because they don’t read their Bibles for themselves to educate themselves.
Two major problems that I have with the Catholic and modern Jewish religions are that most of their leaders expect their members to avoid reading the bible for themselves because “only the leaders can correctly interpret the word and dispense it to the followers.” This disagrees greatly with what Paul tells us.
There are many apostate preachers who are saying that it’s ok to participate in Yoga, mindfulness meditation, tarot reading, Ouija boards, even denying the blood of Christ being able to atone for our sins, and eternal salvation, if we are truly saved they say we can lose our salvation.
Any of these subjects above, including any of the articles I’ve posted to my website would make for great research and Bible study. There are many great commentaries written on the whole Bible, such as ones by Matthew Henry or Harry Ironside or Bill McDonald. There are some great writings by classic theology people like A.W. Tozer and J.W. Pink and one of my all-time favorites J.I. Packers classic “Knowing God.”
I would start with the classics like the ones above, before trying to read anything modern as Theological apostacy started creeping into many seminaries in the 70’s and it’s almost completely pervasive today.
However, whomever you read and take notes from, I’ll borrow from an old mentor of mine… “read and study the Bible from the Greek and Hebrew and get to know it until you own it before you read any commentaries because commentaries are merely the words of other men. Sure, the ones mentioned above are spot on theologically, they are still mortal humans not God himself. There is an old Latin saying, “Sola Scriptura” roughly translated as “Only the Scriptures or Scriptures first and foremost.”
While having a college degree can be nice, in today’s world (for about the last 70 years and getting worse and worse until we have what we have today.) Many of the best Theologians and Pastor/Teachers never went to college. However, they did dedicate themselves to a lifelong study of the Bible, (both Hebrew, Greek and English.)
I count myself very blessed to have had a friend and mentor who opened my eyes to Strong’s Concordance and Thayer’s Greek Lexicon and the English/Greek dictionary and parallel Bibles with the Greek or Hebrew in a Interlinear fashion. It made real Bible study possible. It made my passion for the Word of God possible.
I so enjoy how the longer I read the Bible, the more it sweats out any remaining sin in my life that may be making a temple in my heart. Even after 47 years of Being a Born-Again Child of God in Christ my Savior, I still make tons of mistakes. But the great thing about the Lord and his word… I realize that while Satan accuses me, God is merciful and full of grace and he throws my sins as far away as the East is from the West and invites me into his forever family. However, it must also be said that while he is ever faithful and full of mercy and grace… He is also a Holy and Righteous and All Knowing Judge! if you humble and bow your knee to the lordship of Jesus as your savior and believe in his ability to save you from your sin, if you humble yourself he is merciful to forgive you of your sins and adopts you into the spiritual family of Abraham. However, if a corrupt sinful judge of crimes will convict a criminal of his crimes, Even moreso, God who is an almighty and holy and righteous judge and cannot let sin go unpunished if a person does not have Jesus washing them clean of their sins convicts that person at the end of their life, and depending on their relationship with Jesus – condemns them to hell or welcomes them like the prodigal son was welcomed by his Father.
It opens my eyes to the needs of others so I can come alongside them with empathy and edification which we are commanded by God to give our fellow brothers and sisters in Jesus. It makes me appreciate my beautiful wife and our children more. It makes me want to shout from mountain tops my love for my Savior and God the Father and for the Holy Spirit. It also opens my eyes to the root of evil and sin festering in the Church today. While it’s a problem with churches throughout the world, it seems to originate within American churches and works its root system outwards across seas and continents.
It also helps knowing how to spot a wolf in sheeps clothing as far as False Preachers and False teachers go.
